War on Everyone 2016

War on Everyone 2016
Bob (Michael Peña) and Terry (Alexander Skarsgård) are cops in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Bob is the brains of the two-some randomly spouting trivia, something only his wife (Stephanie Sigman ) might exceed him at. They are not the most honest of cops and allow a heist to go down so they can rob the robbers, which didn't go well.

Terry drives an indestructible vintage Monte Carlo, a joke that never seemed to grow old. It was not the plot, but the characters and dialogue which made the film as our dishonest cops are brutally honest in their speech as they twist lines..."If you hit a mime with your car, does he make a sound? " From the mind of John Michael McDonagh who gave us "The Guard" and "Calvary."

Alexander Skarsgård and Michael Peña star as two struggling, corrupt cops who are on the take, roughing up criminals and wreaking havoc through the city in this action-packed, hilarious, crime caper.

Starring: Alexander Skarsgård, Michael Peña, Theo James
Runtime: 1 hour, 38 minutes

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk 2016

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk 2016
The film’s strength is how it portrays Billy’s alienation from civilian life, haunted by vivid memories of battle, unable to appreciate the applause of stadium crowds when he’s trotted out as a hero, and conflicted by the belief that he isn’t worthy of such a public spotlight. What doesn’t work is the tone of the movie, which switches from raw battle sequences to a satire of prevalent attitudes of the early 2000s. When director Lee presents a scene intended to provoke laughs, the viewer is confused. Is this what he’s supposed to do? Had the film been a straightforward war picture, like “Hacksaw Ridge,” or a satire, like “Dr.Strangelove,” the viewer might be more at ease knowing where the film is heading.

Ang Lee directs the film about private Billy Lynn who is brought home for a victory tour after becoming a hero following an Iraq battle.

Starring: Steve Martin, Kristen Stewart, Chris Tucker
Runtime: 1 hour, 52 minutes

I really was rooting for this movie to be as excellent as it looked. Unfortunately, it's just not that great. It's better than most if not all of the anthology stuff that's come out, but it doesn't really STAND above them.

There isn't a reliance on jump scares, and there's only a few tropes. Unfortunately, almost none of the stories really get resolved. The sequences between the movies are really good, pretty surreal, but don't match the tone of the stories. The stories are also not connected in any way as far as I can tell, and there's nothing at the end that wraps it all together.

Same Day As Theaters. Watch four deadly tales directed by four killer women in this horror anthology. Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body), Roxanne Benjamin (V/H/S, Southbound), Annie Clark (St. Vincent) and Jovanka Vuckovic.

Starring: Melanie Lynskey, Seth Duhame, Sanai Victoria
Runtime: 1 hour, 20 minutes

Fences 2016

Fences 2016
This is an adaptation to the big screen by director Denzel Washington from the play by August Wilson (also the screenwriter here). The film doesn’t open up to the expanse film offers, but maintains a contained environment of the theater. I offer this not as a criticism but an accolade as the movie maintains that attention the viewer typically has watching performances on a small stage.

Washington also stars as Troy Maxson, a garbage man working in New York in the late 1950’s. He’s a WWII veteran who was too old to make it to major league baseball, as well as a victim of racial discrimination.

Set in 1950s Pittsburgh, the film adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play takes a passionate look at former baseball player Troy Maxson as he fights to provide for those he loves in a world that threatens to push him down.

Starring: Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Stephen McKinley Henderson
Runtime: 2 hours, 18 minutes

Bad Santa 2 [2016]

Bad Santa 2 [2016]
One of the films biggest strengths is in its casting. The majority of the original cast returns (except John Ritter, Bernie Mac and Lauren Graham are truly missed) and all of the chemistry from the first film is still there. Kathy Bates who plays Willie's mother is a welcome addition to the cast and fits right into the filthy and vile atmosphere. Christina Hendricks is alright, but her character doesn't add too much to the film.

The biggest question about Bad Santa 2 is if it is in fact funny? For the most part, yes it is! A lot of the humor is reminiscence of the first film filled with crass, raunch, and insults galore. However, with none of the original writers returning this means that some of the wittiness of the first film is missing here.

Fueled by cheap whiskey, greed and hatred, Willie teams up once again with his angry little sidekick, Marcus, to knock off a Chicago charity on Christmas Eve. Along for the ride is ‘the kid’ - chubby and cheery Thurman Merman, a 250-pound ray of sunshine who brings out Willie’s sliver of humanity.

Starring: Billy Bob Thornton, Christina Hendricks, Kathy Bates
Runtime: 1 hour, 34 minutes

The Eagle Huntress 2016

The Eagle Huntress 2016
"The Eagle Huntress" (2016 release from the UK; 87 min.) is a documentary about Aisholpan, a 13 yr. Mongolian girl, and her quest to become the first female eagle huntress. As the movie opens, we are introduced to the wide open spaces of western Mongolia, where eagles have been used for chasing "food and fur" for generations, but until now it was done exclusively by men. We get to know Aisholpan and her family. Her loving and doting dad has noticed his daughter's interest in eagle hunting and, against the better (?) thinking of certain other men in the local community, decides to train her. At this point we're 10 min. into the movie, but to tell you more of what's about to unfold would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.

A spellbinding true story about a 13-year-old girl on an epic journey to become the first female eagle hunter.

Starring: Daisy Ridley
Runtime: 1 hour, 27 minutes

Pinocchio 2017

Pinocchio 2017
Now a part of the celebrated Walt Disney Signature Collection, the timeless story of PINOCCHIO inspires a new generation with its masterful animation, award-winning music, unforgettable characters and exclusive, all-new behind-the-scenes Bonus Extras! With his faithful friend Jiminy Cricket by his side, Pinocchio embarks on fantastic adventures that test his bravery, loyalty and honesty until he triumphs in his quest for his heart's desire: to become a real boy.

The one-two whammy of audience and critical indifference to "Pinocchio" and "Fantasia" killed Walt Disney's desire to experiment with the limits of animation in the 1940s. From then on, play it safe was his motto. This may be one of the greatest tragedies to beset popular American culture in the 20th century; despite the depths of pretension and kitch in "Fantasia," it was at least evidence of a spirited mind in pursuit of the unattained -- but "Pinocchio" must have broken old Walt's heart. There are visual effects in this movie that remained unchallenged until the digital age, and it's worth recalling that every single one of them was drawn by hand

Manchester By The Sea 2017

Manchester By The Sea 2017
The first time that I saw this film, I felt as if it was a bit overwhelming. I left the theater puzzled as to why it got such rave reviews. My initial thoughts were that it was too long, boring, and very depressing. With that said, I decided to give it another chance, and I'm extremely glad I did.

As for those wondering why I would want to subject myself to a film that I initially didn't like for a second time; it's because I like to keep an open mind. In the case of this film, I really wanted to get a better understanding of what it was all about. Having seen it again, I was better able to grasp the complexity of the characters.

If you absolutely hated it, I can understand your feelings. You might, however, want to give it another chance, as in the end my verdict is that it's a masterpiece. It's not a funny film, but it's down to earth and real.

Tyler Perry's Madea on the Run 2017

Tyler Perry's Madea on the Run 2017
Madea on the Run is by far the best Tyler Perry play I've seen and I've seen them all. There's always a positive message that renews your faith in whatever situation you're going through and your faith in God. He delivers it in this comedic way that is totally relatable without being preachy. As usual, the musical selections are outstanding (especially the Deborah Cox & Whitney Houston inspired "I Was Watching You" sung by Claudette Ortiz & Rhonda Davis). I haven't been the biggest fan of Tyler in the past few years as far as his TV dramas were concerned and that awful "Boo!" movie. But this play has restored my faith in him and in that he can produce high quality work. You owe it to yourself to rent and/or buy this DVD and experience a hilarious play with a heartfelt message. You won't regret it!

On the run from the law, Madea hides out at Bam’s house, thinking she will lie low.

Starring: Tyler Perry, Cassi Davis

Don't Knock Twice 2017

Don't Knock Twice 2017
"Knock once to wake her from her bed, twice to raise her from the dead." Katee Sackhoff is a mother fighting to save her daughter from demonic forces in this supernatural shocker.

Some reviews tended to knock this film as derivative or to predictable. I actually liked it (gave it 3.5 stars). The production values are excellent. The pacing of the movie is well done. The special effects are used sparingly and to good effect. What really struck me, unlike some of the other reviewers, was the quality of the performance between the two main female characters. It is true that a mother having difficulty with a teenage daughter has been a ripe field for horror movies. I thought the sensitivity that the two actresses brought to their roles really made their characters more three dimensional and added value to the film. The plot, while a bit predictable, was solidly managed by both the director and the cast. This is a decent movie worth watching, and deserves sequel treatment.

Starring: Katee Sackhoff, Lucy Boynton, Javier Botet
Runtime: 1 hour, 33 minutes

Priceless 2016

Priceless 2016
A desperate man making a shady cross-country delivery is compelled to save two frightened sisters in this powerful story of love, strength and redemption.

This movie addresses topics that no one likes to talk about - human slavery and sex trafficking - but it's done in such a masterful way that it is age appropriate for really anyone. There are some suspenseful scenes but anything else is addressed in such a way that you feel compassion and drive to do something about it. It a great movie as it doesn't preach these topics - it makes you think as a human being and it raises all the questions that need answering. And for anyone who is thinking "oh, it's done by Christians - it'll be cheesy." Let me just say - not a cheeseball moment! Seriously, by the end of the movie you are so motivated to go DO something about the issues presented! (So it's a good thing they give the website dedicated to listing resources for rescuing and helping these people.)

Bleed for This 2016

Bleed for This 2016
The inspirational true story of world champion boxer Vinny "The Pazmanian Devil" Pazienza, who–after a near fatal car crash–made one of sport’s most incredible comebacks.

I have no idea of why anyone would give this movie a bad review. Granted I like sports movies in the first place but I thought this was just as good as many of the more popular sports movies. And furthermore it's true. Just out of curiosity I looked up the real story online afterwards. And I was able to watch some clips from the real comeback fight. Amazing story, amazing man. Totally a movie worth watching!

Theater review. In a flashback scene, Jackie Kennedy (Natalie Portman) is riding in the back of a hearse taking her assassinated husband’s body from the airport to the White House. He says no. She then asks the nurse accompanying the body if she knows who James Garfield was. She says no. Jackie Kennedy is determined that people will remember her husband’s short time as president and not be just some beautiful people as Bobby fears.

Natalie Portman stars in this powerfully stirring drama as First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, whose faith and strength see her through the death of President John F. Kennedy.

Nocturnal Animals 2016

Nocturnal Animals 2016
From the opening shot of this film you can already predict on what kind of film "Nocturnal Animals" is going to be. Now a forward warning for people who plan on seeing this movie, this is an extremely hard to watch film. No spoilers of course but the first scene in the movie is a bit hard to watch and some of the people I went to watch the movie wanted to walk out of the theater at that moment. If you don't like watching movies with hard to watch imagery and really tough subject matters, I would not recommend seeing this. But for people who really want to see a pretty much, perfectly directed art-film that will get under your skin, "Nocturnal Animals" is a must see.

Moonlight 2016

Moonlight 2016
Directed by Barry Jenkins (Medicine for Melancholy) from a screenplay by Jenkins based on a story by Tarell Alvin McCraney, Moonlight is an incredible film with outstanding performances and a superbly crafted screenplay, probably the surprise critical hit of 2016.

It's kind of tricky to describe Moonlight without giving too much away, not because there are any big reveals or twists in the film but because it flows so beautifully that it's best to see it without knowing too much about where it's going in order to appreciate just how well crafted the screenplay is. It won't hurt though to say that the film consists of three "chapters", each covering a different stage of the main character's life and each titled with the name the character - Chiron - goes by at that stage of his life.

A moving, transcendent, award-winning look at 3 defining chapters in the life of Chiron, a young man growing up in Miami. His epic journey to adulthood, as a shy outsider dealing with difficult circumstances, is guided by support, empathy and love from the most unexpected places.

Starring: Mahershala Ali, Alex Hibbert, Janelle Monáe

First we are immersed in an old and dusty occupied Casablanca. Max Vatan is a Canadian working for the RAF as a pilot and secretly he is a spy. He lands in gorgeous sand dunes and off he goes to town by prearrangement. Car and hotel room and fake wife and papers all await. The deluxe life of old colonial hotels has been carefully reconstituted for this part of the film as have been the sand dunes! Our director is meticulous! The costumes and hairdos and cars and sunglasses and shoes and music are all perfect.

The song J'attenderai plays often in this film. Beautiful in French: see Max raabe sing it in YouTube. I will wait! Indeed so will the audience. When Intelligence Officer Max Vatan (Brad Pitt) learns his wife (Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard) may be conspiring with the enemy, he has only 72 hours to prove her innocence and save his family before he must do the unthinkable.

Arrival 2016

Arrival 2016
A story about time ... really. How we perceive time, and if it were not linear - which direction we might choose to go. The aliens are incidental. Amy Adams is compelling to watch in this film, (which really is a sci-fi/philosophical film), and the viewer sort of lives in her head. This particular sci-fi is along the lines of "Contact", and (even more so) Interstellar.

If you are looking for something like "Independence Day," or "Aliens" then you will be disappointed. If you enjoyed "Interstellar," "Contact," or even "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," then you should find this movie very entertaining, and thought provoking. The film is carried entirely by Amy Adams - while the other actors did a fine job (including the special effect aliens) they (like the Sci-fi theme) are all incidental to Amy Adams character.

When mysterious spacecraft land across the globe, expert translator Louise Banks is sent to decipher their intent. As tensions mount, Banks discovers the aliens’ true purpose and, to avert global war, takes a chance that could threaten humanity.

Starring: Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker
Runtime: 1 hour, 56 minutes

I’m a movie lover but I usually try to avoid heart-wrenching stories, unless they had been previously acclaimed by many serious sources. Even then I’m very picky. I do not write reviews, though, there are experts for that that I rather read. So why I’m writing a review for Manchester by the Sea? Because it was a tragic story that I didn't plan on watching and now is one of my all-time favorites.

Coming to Prime Video on May 5th, 2017. Casey Affleck leads an all-star cast in this acclaimed and poignant film about a solitary janitor whose life is transformed after he becomes the guardian of his 16-year-old nephew. Manchester By The Sea is an Amazon Original Movie.
