Star Trek Beyond 2016

Star Trek Beyond 2016
After one viewing I'm not sure, but this may be my favorite Trek film ever - it's certainly my favorite in the last few years. I'm not sure if under repeated viewings it'll stand up against some of the classics (4 and undiscovered country for instance) but right now I'm just thrilled to have something so enjoyable back in the franchise.

The writer knows and loves the series and obviously cares about the characters and the universe and took real effort to put in time and lines and references and fun for each character.

The story itself is ok - not amazing, but it serves and does its job - mainly in this movie it's a framework to hang performances and moments on so you can spend time with the characters and explore the universe, and it does that beautifully. Each actor gets time to actually develop (at least a little, some more than others of course) and the universe itself gets time to shine as well - the Yorktown is breath taking and made me feel like a little boy again - seeing the future as only really great sci fi can imagine it, the enemies ships are impressive and the world visited during the story and it's history is even interesting, though not as important / developed.

On a rescue mission, the USS Enterprise is attacked by Krall, a warlord sworn against the Federation. Crashed on an uncharted world, the crew must join forces with Jaylah, a rebellious alien warrior, to escape and stop Krall from triggering all-out war.
