Movie : Catch .44

Movie : Catch .44
Movie : Catch .44. I had heard and read so many scathingly critical comments flung at writer/director Aaron Harvey's "Catch .44" that I was convinced it must surely be a disaster of epic proportion.

I'm not sure what anyone else anticipates when sitting down to a straight-to-DVD endeavor, but my expectations tend to run fairly low. Thus, I was actually pleasantly surprised by this film. I found it quite entertaining in its own right with a number of noteworthy performances.

Harvey shows a deft hand when handling dialogue and that ends up being a saving grace to the movie.

Movie : Burke & Hare

Movie : Burke & Hare
Movie : Burke & Hare. Very much in the tradition of classic, sly, gentle and darkly funny Ealing comedies, "Burke & Hare" takes a genuine point in history and plays with it, all the while remaining tongue in cheek, true to its premise, delightfully unpredictable and profoundly human.

Anyone that still thinks fondly of the very original "The Ladykillers", "Kind Hearts and Coronets", "The Lavender Hill Mob" or others from Ealing's golden age will be more than pleased to see that style arrive refreshed, updated, carefully written -- the multiple plot lines add considerable depth, bringing this humour noir / period comedy in line with 21st century expectations -- and wonderfully produced and performed.

We'll see if "Burke & Hare" manages to stand the test of time as well as those earlier films, but it easily surpasses any requirements needed to engage your interest and your humor for a near pitch-perfect 90 minutes.

Movie : Children Of Dune

Movie : Children Of Dune
Movie : Children Of Dune. The toughest thing about 'Frank Herbert's Dune', presented on the SciFi Channel in 2000, was that all Dune fans knew, just KNEW, there'd be comparisons made between it and David Lynch's theatrical release.

Although the strong casting, new-found special effects and costumes made Lynch's version a film to be reckoned with, it still felt unbalanced and lost amidst the deeply textured background world that Frank Herbert created.

Movie : I Sell the Dead

Movie : I Sell the Dead
Movie : I Sell the Dead. This movie has been getting good press in mags like "Fangoria" and "Rue Morgue." It can be rented at Blockbuster as one of their exclusives and is scheduled for a street release at the end of March. It is a low budget project, but one that's produced with a lot of class, wit, energy and a respect for the genre.

It involves a couple of low-life, but likable Burke and Hare-type grave robbers named Grimes and Blake, and their misadventures supplying fresh corpses for a local doctor/mortician (Angus Scrimm). They unearth the usual rotten and not-so-rotten corpses, vampires, zombies and even an extraterrestrial

Movie : Avatar

Movie : Avatar
Movie : Avatar. As it turns out, Fox has craftily decided to milk "Avatar" for every possibly penny, since the debut DVD/blu-ray will be a bare-bones release -- and it will be one of the first major films to appear in home video without any of the regular special features, such as theatrical trailers, deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes footage.

If you want all the extra features, you'll have to wait until November, when you can buy a second "Avatar" DVD, currently titled the "Ultimate Edition," which will include all of the fancy stuff. And then, if you have really deep pockets, you can come back to the video store next year and buy a third, 3-D, version of the DVD.
