Movie : Certified Copy

Movie : Certified Copy. Marriage is a complicated thing and this movie does a good job of looking at a marriage that has fallen apart. Bad relationships make sad movies but such movies give thought to why relationships come apart.

The movie is beautifully filmed in Tusacany. The acting was very well done. The script was well written. I think that you will enjoy this film and I hope that Amazon finds other wonderful movies that are as wonderful as this for their customers.

Movie : Heartless

Movie : Heartless. Philip Ridley is an artist, a writer and a film director whose work is considered unconventional and unique in every form he touches. Some how he manages to marry all of these forms in his most recent HEARTLESS, including writing the lyrics to the many songs by David Julyou that play such an important role in the unfolding of this visit to the Faust legend.

It is harsh, dark, disturbing, and at times a bit over the top as far as his need to make visual things that go bump in the dark. But in the end, with the incomparable help of featured actor Jim Sturgess, he makes it work.

Medicine for Melancholy

Medicine for Melancholy. I saw "Medicine for Melancholy" last year at the Sarasota Film Festival and was generally impressed by the film. "Medicine for Melancholy" tells the story of Micah (Wyatt Cenac) and Jo (Tracey Heggins), two strangers in San Francisco who wake from a drunken one night stand after meeting at a party.

The film follows them through the following day, where they deal with the topics of race, urban life, and the ultimate issue of whether what happened between them truly meant anything or was simply a one night stand. Wyatt Cenac, now a correspondent on The Daily Show, is perfectly suited for his role as Micah and does an excellent job throughout the entire film.

Movie : Pontypool

Movie : Pontypool. Let me start by saying that I'm huge lover of zombies and as such I bought this film because the preview looked promising. I liked the movie and I'm glad I bought it, as opposed to renting it, because I'm not sure what just happened.

(Also, I think I'd still be waiting for it from NetFlix) The filming quality is decent, as are all of the other elements of the film, but given the lack of a set variety it is apparent that this is a pretty low budget operation. If you want blood and guts this is not for you.

Movie : Midnight in Paris

Movie : Midnight in Paris. The long lead-in showing scenes in Paris had me wondering....but it was nice to look at.
The movie's first ten minutes had me wondering....to stay or not to stay.
After that I stopped wondering... it just got better and better....and better (and I am NOT a Woody Allen fan).
Almost anything else I praise about this film will act as a spoiler.
My wife and I intend to see it again...and soon

Movie : Rise Of The Planet of the Apes

Movie : Rise Of The Planet of the Apes. For a movie whose trailer seemed fake at first glance (a serious drama about a superintelligent ape and his issues?), RotPotA (rot-POT-uh) does an incredible job getting you invested in the plight of a chimp.

Low budget for a summer blockbuster, this ninety million dollar film focuses on the rise of Caesar, first of his species and leader of the apes.

We watch as he grows up, casts off his human friendships, and eventually leads a revolt in the hopes of achieving freedom for his people, err, his fellow apes.

Movie : Colombiana

Movie : Colombiana. It is not the greatest movie of all times, but it is very entertaining, and I do like the revenge flics, and Zoe Saldana did a very good job portraying the character, she had a good balance between revenge and her emotions over what she was doing, she was not the typical heartless killer. On par her character reminded me of Denzel Washington character from "Man on Fire", both characters balanced their revenge and their emotions with their revenge acts.

The movie could have been better, maybe more character development with the bad guys and her parents to fully understand the revenge, other than that she saw them killed in front of her.

Movie : Warrior

Movie : Warrior. Except for the lack of a SPOILER note at the beginning of the first reviewer, I think these first two reviews pretty much cover the story and hit some high points of the film. I do want to disagree with some of the remarks, though.

First, I would not call this a sports movie. It is not Rocky, Raging Bull, The Wrestler, or The Fighter. Warrior, according to many professional critics, is better than all of them, and I agree.

There is the suspense factor of who will win the championship fight, for sure, and the stand-up-and-cheer factor as the opponents are picked off one by one, and there is the heartwarming factor as the school teacher tries to save his home from foreclosure. These cliches somehow are not relevant to this film and I salute O'Connor and the other writers for telling a story that glosses over them.

Movie : Dolphin Tale

Movie : Dolphin Tale. Set in Clearwater, Florida and inspired by a true story (yes, there is a real Winter the Dolphin!), the story centers on a young boy Sawyer (Nathan Gamble in a finely nuanced performance) who is portrayed as being despondent at the beginning of the movie - he is sad that his cousin,Kyle (Austin Stowell) a champion swimmer is going away to serve the country as a soldier.

Kyle is Sawyer's role model and mentor, and the closest thing he has to a 'dad' figure given his own father left the family when he was very young. Sawyer's mom, Lorraine (Ashely Judd) tries her best to cope and provide for Sawyer, but she can't seem to bring Sawyer out of his doldrums. Sawyer is also very unhappy that he has to attend summer school, but something happens to change the way Sawyer views life.

Movie : Moneyball

Movie : Moneyball. Every year, I get wary of the inevitable film set in a sporting arena where an underdog player or team must triumph against adversity to become unlikely heroes. As accomplished or heartwarming as many of these films can be, they never seem to be able to break free of the conventions that we've all seen a hundred times.

While I can't say that "Moneyball" isn't inspired by the genre, I will say that it looks at the phenomenon from a decidedly different angle. Based on Michael Lewis's non-fiction account of the same name, this is actually an intriguing story ruled by the business of baseball as opposed to the emotions the game elicits. As such, it seems like something entirely new.

Movie : Straw Dogs. I picked this because I like Alexandar Skarsgard from True Blood. I thought it looked okay on the trailer but the movie went way beyond my expectations....it kept me guessing thru the whole movie. I will recommend it to all my friends.

It was action packed every moment and kept me on the edge of my chair until the very end....

Movie : Blackthorn

Movie : Blackthorn. Surprised. Not by Shepard, who I've long thought is one of our great under-appreciated leading men, but by the story, the style and feel of the movie. I think I loved it. I've read some critics have called it "slow".....absolutely, its what I call a "slow burner." Not every story needs to move like a freight train.

There are a lot of ways the writer and director could have screwed this up, in just my opinion they dodged all the bullets. Like so many people I have a long term love affair with "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid," so any movie taking a stab at sequel-ing that is running on dangerous ground. But they pulled it off.

Movie : Underworld Trilogy (Underworld / Underworld: Evolution / Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. Blade meets The Crow and The Matrix in Underworld, a hybrid thriller that rewrites the rulebook on werewolves and vampires.

It's a "cuisinart" movie (blend a lot of familiar ideas and hope something interesting happens) in which immortal vampire "death dealers" wage an ancient war against "Lycans" (werewolves), who've got centuries of revenge--and some rather ambitious genetic experiments--on their lycanthropic agenda.

Given his preoccupation with gloomy architecture (mostly filmed in Budapest, Hungary), frenetic mayhem and gothic costuming, it's no surprise that first-time director Len Wiseman gained experience in TV commercials and the art departments of Godzilla, Men in Black, and Independence Day.

Movie : Five Minutes of Heaven. When friend Vika (Anamaria Marinca) asks Joe Griffen (James Nesbitt), the brother of a man killed in 1975 by one Alistair Little (Liam Neeson), if killing Alistair would not be good for him, Joe replies ' Not good for me? My five minutes of heaven!'

And so runs the razor sharp dialog and acting and power of this little film from the UK that relates the story of a 1975 event in Northern Ireland when Catholics and Protestants were at war and the young Protestant Alistair Little (Mark David), as a UVF member (Ulster Volunteer Force), gathers his friends and 'kills a Catholic' - but the murder happens in front of the victim's 11-year-old brother Joe Griffen

Glee: The Concert Movie

Glee: The Concert Movie. If there's one thing Glee has taught me, even at 23, is to be who you are and don't ever change that for anyone. 'Glee Live! In Concert' was the 2nd tour by the memebers of the hit Fox show Glee: The Complete First Season. They perform the best of the best from the show.

There are cute little vignettes in between songs talking about Janae, a dwarf, and how she deals with her "handicap" and Trenton, a gay kid who was outed unwillingly by his classmates; they share their stories. The staging is simple but the lighting and video screens make up the theatrics.

Although it's evident that the majority of the show is dubbed, that does not take away from the magic that is Glee. The members performed as a cast as well as solos- THE WARBLERS AND GWYNETH PALTROW MAKE APPEARANCES!!

Movie : Margin Call (2011)

Movie : Margin Call (2011). The only guy who knows that the company is screwed just got laid off. This begins a compelling drama based somewhat on the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008. To be clear, this is not a thriller and it's not a fictionalized retelling of the Lehman collapse. It's a conventional drama. And most of the story takes place in a single building.

The film dramatizes what the executives did in the 24 hours after they realized they were sitting on billions in worthless assets. "So, what you're telling me is that the music is about to stop and we're gonna be left holding the biggest bag of odorous excrement ever assembled in the history of capitalism." That's the big cheese played by Jeremy Irons. He concocts a scheme to dump the assets on unsuspecting buyers within a single business day. His underling opposes the idea. Kevin Spacey plays the underling and he's pretty awesome.
